Fly Away - Iguanodons

 

Boy, I've neglected this blog to long. But I'm back to share a new painting with everyone who might be interested.

I've painted a scene of a couple of Iguanodon watching the bird Iberomesornis take flight from their forest home. I've aimed for a tranquil scene, something very ordinary yet beautiful in its own way.

I very much enjoyed painting this one. I feel I'm getting more comfortable with my style...very loose and abstract, but realistic in a way.

I'm busy working on a lone Styracosaurus, although that can always change. And I'm sketching more ideas for future work.

Stegosaur painting and new site to purchase prints

Hi everyone! I finally finished my stegosaur painting featuring the Chinese Tuojiangosaurus. I like the atmosphere of the piece and think it turned out nice. With my paleoart I try to develop an intersting style and really want the animals to be a part of their surroundings. I try for mood. Hopefully I was successful!

More half finished things...

These are the things I have going at the moment, along with the Steggie painting I'm almost done with. The Reign dinos have kept me busy the last couple weeks, so I put my stuff aside while I work on them. I thought I would just post the WIPs anyway, so I don't neglect the blog for to long.

I'm almost there with the color map for the Olorotitan. Alas, I missed the Hadrosaur Gallery for Art Evolved as I got so distracted, but maybe I can still put him in it when he is done:)

So, the two new paintings I haven't decided on the creatures yet, I'm just playing with shapes. The next PT I think needs Tenontos, so maybe the forest painting will get one of those. Now it just has some random Iguanodon type thing in there to play with shape and angle of the dinosaur. The other one I just sketched in something to see what the pose would look like. It turned into something feathery. Not sure what dino it should be yet.

Anyway, that's what I've been up too;)

Detailing the Olorotitan and other WIPs

I've been at work detailing this model. This Olorotitan is an older, adult bull. He's been around the block a few times and is no pushover. So he has the bite marks and scars to proove it. I'm going to move on to making the other maps for him and add details as I go along, but this is where I am at.

Also still working on my Stegosaur painting. I still have a long way to go, but its heading in the right direction. I'm blocking in the steg, getting his pattern and colors the way I want them before I tie him in with the background. Right now he stands out way to much.

Steg painting WIP

I decided I needed to jump back into some painting! I've been working on this forest scene, trying to stay loose and yet realistic at the same time. I tend to prefer Paleoart that is heavy on the art and less so on the scientific illustration. If that makes sense;)

In this piece I want to try and paint a peaceful forest setting, with pretty colors and nice texture. I'm still working on pulling it together, but am happy so far.

I've loosely sketched in a potential inhabitant of the prehistoric forest. Some type of Stegosaur was calling to me and felt right in this setting. For now he is a generic form of steggie. I'll probably either go with Tuojiangosaurus or maybe Miragaia.

Anyway, I have many more in my head that I want to get going on. Maybe I will block in more paintings tonight;) I'll post more as I finish.

Painted figure

Alrighty, got to paint up one of my figures (Brachylophosaurus) that was printed from my CGI model. And here she is:) I was happy with how it turned out and plan on putting her in a diorama. I'm pretty sure she is screaming at a Tyrannosaur...telling him where to stick it :-D

Nothing like Last Minute-itis...Cryolophosaurus

Alright, so I waited until the very end before deciding to paint a Cryolophosaurus. I had this sudden idea and thought...I need to paint something for PT magazine. The next dino feature is a Cryo. Let's paint it standing on a hill. Sniffing the air. In a sunset. Backlit.

OMG! This painting I was sure would fail from the start. Leave it to me to start it 3 days before the due date. Backlighting is HARD to paint! And throw in a sunset full of cloud patterns and colors. Whoa, it was a stupid idea and from the sketch I thought well...I can always just paint over it.

To my surprise it actually went relatively smoothly and I don't hate it. This is actually my first painting of a therapod. I find them difficult to get inspired by. Not sure why. Plus I'm partial to hadrosaurs, so am always looking for an excuse to paint them:-)

So, thankfully I learned that this guy was more like Dilophosaurus than the more robust Cryo's that are rendered. So I made my Cryo very gracile. To me, dinosaurs were beautiful animals and I want to try my best to portray them that way. Here, this Cryo is testing the wind, maybe has the scent of a female or prey.

I gave him a light coating of feathers on his neck and tail, mostly to break up the outline and add some interest. Backlighting is so hard to paint for me and to avoid the "halo effect" of the subject being outlined in bright light.

I had some problems coming up with a color pattern that would suit the backlight effect. I chose a piebald coloring (finally) so I could paint those gorgeous pinks, oranges and purples in the light colored areas.

So, overall I'm happy with it and happy it didn't fail!!! My first therapod, and sunset painting:-)

Not perfect at all...so I hope I improve as time goes on, but at least I don't hate it:-)

New wildlife and Paleoart

Hello!

So I've been busy with trying to get some more wildlife work done and attempting to perfect my colorful, expressive style:) I still have a ways to go, but am happy painting with all those colors.

I'm trying to get ready for this summers county fairs and an art and craft show I am trying to get juried into that will be over in San Francisco this summer. So I am painting a lot and also started some new felted pieces.

So I have a new wolf painting and a coyote portrait. I may still paint some "details" into these paintings, but for now I have them pretty good. A kaleidoscope of colors to make the painting fun and pop off the wall! I also changed some in the "Lobo" painting as I wasn't happy with it, just added more colors, etc.

Anyway, I also finished up the Hadrosaur painting I had been neglecting. Two Brachylophosaurus find their way to the top of a hill overlooking what must be a beautiful prehistoric landscape. This is the same dinosaur as "Leonardo", the famed dinosaur mummy.

I also have adjusted some things to my Styracosaurus painting that I felt needed to be done. After reading about them on Nima's fantastic blog I decided I could do a little better with the frills, etc. Nothing big, but I like it better now. For anyone interested in Paleoart I highly recommend Nima's blog! It looks like it will be a goldmine of information, plus some great artwork to boot:-)

So, I have got some bear paintings coming up and some new paleoart as well. I'll also put up my new felted pieces when they are further along.

New work

A couple of new paintings to show.

I finished a new group of wolves called "3 of a kind". I really love painting all those colors and shapes. One of my favorite artists is John Nieto and his bold and colorfully painted animals inspire me.

Another painting of ceratopsids running through flowers. This time it is of two Styracosaurus galloping through a field of spring wildflowers for fun.

Art Evolved launches...

I'm happy to be a part of a new online gallery called Art Evolved. It has officially launched today and has a great group of talented artists sharing their paleoart work with the world. The first gallery theme is the ceratopsians, those frilled and horned group of dinosaurs everyone loves.

New Paleoart Piece

"Edmontosaurus"

I enjoy Paleontology and painting prehistoric animals. This is my newest Paleoart painting. It depicts a hadrosaur called Edmontosaurus walking through colorful flowers, similar to my Chasmosaurus painting I did.

Since dinosaur coloring is not known, I chose tans and yellows with a beautiful blue head and tail for this dinosaur to compliment the oranges and yellows of the flowers.

Hadrosaurs, or "duckbills", are my favorite type of dinosaur so I likely be painting more of them!

More bears and a prehistoric beast...

Another acrylic painting of a grizzly bear, who is taking a stroll on the tundra. This is a small painting, 8"x10" on pastelbord. I found the surface easy to work with acrylics on and I'm pleased with how this little painting turned out.

I've ordered some colourfix primer to put on some gessobord so I can see how that surface is to paint on. They have some neat colors that I think would be fun to try.

The other painting is of a dinosaur, Chasmosaurus. Flowers had just started evolving during the time this guy was around, so I painted him enjoying running through a wildflower field. If you are wondering where this came from, I've had an interest in Paleontology since I can remember. Animals of unbelievable size and forms that really existed! How cool is that! Plus, I get to take the creative license pretty far in terms of color, ornamentation, behaviors, etc. The term for this kind of art is called Paleoart, or Paleo Wildlife Art. This painting will hopefully soon find it's way into Prehistoric Times magazine...a great mag that caters to all things prehistoric!
